Managing Allergies

Spring, summer, even in the fall, allergies plague many of us and cause sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion, or asthma. Luckily, most of these symptoms can be easily managed without resorting to expensive and toxic antihistamines. Here are some guidelines for handling those annual hay fever symptoms.

Acute remedies

When symptoms flare up there are two effective types of natural remedies, herbal formulas and homeopathic medicines.

Chinese herbal formulas

Xanthium Relieve Surface tablets Relieves symptoms immediately, like an antihistamine. Use it for hay fever attacks with sneezing, watery nasal discharge, and itching eyes. Take them whenever symptoms occur, up to 3 tabs 3 times per day.

Minor Blue Dragon tablets This formula treats sinus congestion and pressure associated with allergies and clear nasal discharge. It contains the herb ma huang (ephedra). People with high blood pressure or a sensitivity to this herb should avoid its use.

Homeopathic medicines

Allium cepa 30c Treats attacks of sneezing, runny, irritated nose, and watery eyes. Take 2 pellets as needed for symptoms.

Kali-bichromicum 30c Use for persistent sinus congestion with thick nasal discharge. Take two pellets three times per day.

Preventive measures

Get a HEPA air filter and run it in your bedroom 24 hours a day. This portable room filter will clean the air of pollens and dust. Honeywell and Enviracaire filters are available at discount stores such as Target and Costco.

Take colostrum, two capsules twice a day for adults (one capsule twice a day for kids). Colostrum is the first milk that is secreted in mammals for a few days after birth. It contains immune system stimulants that prevent infections and allergies. Cow's colostrum is freeze dried and packaged in capsules. Make sure the brand you take is organic, such as New Life Colostrum produced by Symbiotics.

Set up an appointment for a constitutional homeopathic medicine, which is given in a single dose to boost the immune system and prevent recurrences of symptoms. Acupuncture can be helpful as well.

An herbal formula containing astragalus can strengthen the immune system and prevent symptoms. Strengthen Lung by Modular Solutions is an effective formula that prevents and treats respiratory congestion and the tendency to allergic reactions.

Asthma and sinus infections can be more serious manifestations of allergic reactions. When symptoms of wheezing, persistent coughing, or sinus pain occur, more individualized treatment is necessary to control symptoms.

All of the remedies discussed in this article are available in my office and with them we can manage most allergy problems, making your spring and summer sneeze-free.
