The FDA finally admitted on September 13 what experts have known for years, that antidepressants prescribed to children and teens promote suicidal behavior. This acknowledgement confirms the statement that FDA staff scientist Andrew Mosholder made seven months ago. Children who take antidepressants have an increased risk of suicidal tendencies. Last year British health authorities declared that most antidepressants might increase the risk of suicidal behavior in kids, and they advised that all antidepressants (except Prozac) are unsuitable for depressed youth.
In response to the findings, the FDA has called for a black box warning to be printed on antidepressant medications stating that they can spur suicidal behavior in children and teenagers. In addition, the FDA advisers suggested that parents should sign a form stating that they understand the risks.
What a pity that the FDA does not also acknowledge the many safe and effective alternatives to antidepressants. Omega-3 fats, vitamin D, natural food diets, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture all provide excellent support and effective treatment for depression in children. Of course the causes and root of depression should always also be addressed.
Parents need to be made aware of these effective natural methods of relieving depression and regaining emotional balance. We need to abandon the wholesale drugging of our children with stimulants and antidepressants, and turn to a more holistic approach that encourages healing.
