It is no secret that American children are not reaching their full health potential. The current state of health and vitality for many children is way below optimum. Obesity, autism, ADHD, asthma, learning disorders, depression, diabetes and environmental illness are alarmingly common. Signs of weakened or damaged immune systems appear in children with chronic infections and auto-immune disease. The amount of anti-depressants prescribed to children is at an all-time high. The number of potentially toxic vaccines that a typical child receives within the first year of life is staggering. The vast amount of toxic chemicals that invade a child's daily life is tragic.

Unfortunately, the current approach to pediatric health falls short of addressing these crucial problems. The model of health care that uses drugs to suppress symptoms and vaccines to manipulate natural biological processes simply does not work and is contributing to even greater problems for our children.

Our children have the potential to be exceptionally healthy and vibrant with sharp, creative minds and exuberant energy and vitality. Holistic medicine has the ability to alleviate and heal children's acute and chronic conditions without dangerous side affects. Parents need to know about the safety and effectiveness of Chinese medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic, naturopathic medicine, and other holistic approaches. They need to learn about nutrition, environmental toxins and what it takes to build healthy bodies, minds, and emotional well-being in their children.

We can no longer stand by and watch as our children are sacrificed to a health system that ignores their natural vital force and threatens their growth and development. The time for change is NOW .

The HPA has brought together leading experts in holistic pediatrics and parenting, all with many years' experience in teaching, writing, and clinical practice. We have the knowledge and determination to transform the way pediatrics is practiced. With your help we will succeed.

We are making great strides in providing quality education to practitioners through seminars for primary care medical providers (pediatricians, family physicians, chiropractors, naturopaths and acupuncturists), an annual conference, and continuing education seminars at naturopathic and other medical schools. We publish a newsletter and other essential educational materials for health professionals. We also plan to offer certification courses in holistic pediatrics.

We provide free, comprehensive online parenting education. Our Holistic Parenting Resource Center includes hundreds of articles on children's health, support forums for parent participation, and links to other important resources. We will soon be adding expert advice columns, natural product shopping guides, book reviews, whole foods nutrition guides and recipes. Our searchable health professional directory is widely searched by parents seeking holistic health professionals for their children. Our website currently receives over 20,000 unique visitors and 300,000 hits a month. Parents have expressed unequivocally how valuable our information is to them.

In addition, we are creating a network of Parent Education and Support Coordinators who will assist individual families with the information they so vitally need to make informed decisions for their children's health and well-being.

The HPA is presenting a radio talk show for parents, available to everyone through the Internet. This weekly show offers practical advice and resources to parents who are struggling with the conservative position of conventional pediatrics, seeking alternatives that fit their natural and holistic lifestyles, and looking for a supportive, health promoting, and nontoxic system of health care for their children.

We are building partnerships with other organizations such as Families for Natural Living, Holistic Moms Network, Alliance for Transforming the Lives of Children, Attachment Parenting International, and LaLeche League, and encouraging parents who contact us to join or form local community support groups through one of these organizations. Together, we will be able to reach hundreds of thousands of families.
